So, you’re planning an engagement shoot at Yorktown Beach—awesome choice! It’s a gorgeous spot with plenty of charm. As a wedding photographer based in Williamsburg, VA, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing many stunning moments by the water, and I’ve picked up a few tricks along the way that I’d love to share with you. This post features images from Erica and Chris’ recent Yorktown Beach Engagement (how dreamy!).

1. Golden Hour Magic

First things first: timing is everything! Yorktown Beach is absolutely beautiful, but it doesn’t offer a lot of shade. That means if you’re planning your shoot during midday, you might end up with harsh lighting and squinting eyes. Instead, aim for golden hour—the time just after sunrise or before sunset. The light is soft, warm, and flattering, giving your photos that magical glow. Plus, the low angle of the sun means you’ll get fewer shadows and a more romantic feel. Trust me, it’s worth the early wake-up call or a slightly later evening!

2. Choose a Weeknight

Yorktown Beach can get pretty busy on weekends, especially during the summer. If you want a more relaxed, intimate vibe, consider scheduling your engagement session on a weeknight. The beach will be less crowded, and you’ll have more space and privacy for those special moments. Plus, you won’t have to worry about other beachgoers photobombing your shots!

3. Keep It Casual

The beach is all about laid-back vibes, so dress accordingly. Think comfortable, airy outfits that won’t restrict your movement. Light, flowy dresses for her and casual shirts and pants for him work great. And don’t forget to bring some beach-friendly footwear—or go barefoot for that carefree, sandy look.

4. Embrace the Natural Setting

Yorktown Beach is stunning on its own, so let the natural beauty shine through in your photos. Play around with the waves, the sand, and the horizon. We can capture some lovely candid moments as you walk hand in hand along the shore or even dip your toes in the water.

5. Bring Essentials

Even though it’s a beach shoot, there are a few essentials to keep in mind. Bring some sunscreen to avoid sunburn, and if you’re planning to get close to the water, a towel or a change of clothes might come in handy. Also, consider bringing a small snack and some water to stay refreshed if it’s summertime (Virginia is quite humid!).

6. Plan Ahead

A little planning goes a long way. If you’re interested in a particular spot on the beach, let me know ahead of time so we can scout it out together. And if you have any special ideas or themes in mind, share those with me! I’m here to make your vision come to life.
