Confession time: summer family photos in Williamsburg are beautiful — but they can also be very hot. During a recent session as a Williamsburg family photographer, we had so much fun laughing together, but we also learned a few helpful tricks to beat the heat and still capture joyful, timeless memories.
This family wanted to capture portraits before their eldest headed back out of state for college, which made the session feel especially meaningful. They chose bright, cheerful summer colors that popped against the historic charm of Colonial Williamsburg. As we walked together through gardens, cobblestone paths, and shaded corners, we kept things moving — which not only gave us beautiful variety in backgrounds but also helped the kids stay engaged and full of energy.

Along the way, baby Will kept us all laughing. He was full of personality and had his own ideas about posing, crawling off in the grass and even making a playful attempt at my camera. Some of my favorite photos are of his family’s faces lighting up as they watched him explore. Those in-between, unscripted moments are what make family sessions so fun and full of life.

1. Hydration is Key
It sounds simple, but bringing plenty of water makes all the difference. Kids (and parents) last so much longer when they can sip between poses. Pro tip: pack reusable insulated bottles so your water stays cold throughout your session.
2. Bring Fans and Cool-Down Helpers
Battery-powered hand fans are lifesavers on hot Virginia days. They fit easily in a bag and help everyone cool down between shots. I also recommend a small towel or blotting cloths to freshen up without messing up hair or makeup.
3. Choose Breathable Outfits
Outfits matter in more ways than one. Stick with light, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, and lighter colors that reflect heat and look beautiful in photos. This family’s bright summer palette looked incredible in the golden light and against Colonial Williamsburg’s historic backdrops.
Quick tip: do a water test at home — dab a bit of water on the fabric to see if it shows sweat. That way you’ll know you’re choosing clothes that stay picture-perfect.
4. Plan a Sweet Reward
One of my favorite tips? End your session with ice cream in Colonial Williamsburg. Not only does it give the kids (and grown-ups) something to look forward to, but it also turns your photo day into a family memory you’ll always cherish. The smiles after ice cream are some of the best. Our favorite recommendation is Kilwins!

Yes, it’s hot — but summer family photos in Williamsburg can be an absolute blast with a little planning. With water, fans, the right outfits, and a sweet treat to finish, your family will look and feel their best.
This session was a beautiful reminder of why family portraits matter: celebrating milestones, keeping everyone engaged, and capturing joy in the middle of real life.
