Hey friends! I’m so excited to share some fun photos from a recent snow day with my kiddos. We had so much fun playing outside—sledding, having a snowball fight, and building a snowman in the frontyard. If you’re looking for tips for taking photos of your kids, read on! Watching them laugh, run around, and just enjoy the simple joy of a snow-covered world reminded me of how much fun it can be to take photos of your kids in the moment.

As a wedding photographer, I often talk to couples about capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments, but it’s also so important to cherish the everyday moments, too. Taking photos of your kids can be just as magical as photographing a wedding. It’s all about capturing the fleeting moments and emotions that tell a story.

Here are a few tips I’ve learned through my work—and as a mom—on how to take great photos of your kids while they’re out having fun, whether it’s on a snowy day or just a typical afternoon:

1. Be Ready to Capture the Magic

When I’m out in the snow with my kids, I always have my camera ready. Kids move fast, especially when they’re excited! I always try to anticipate the action, like when my son is about to launch a snowball or go down the hill on his sled. The beauty of taking photos of your kids during playtime is that you can capture those candid, joyful moments that are so much more authentic than posed shots. Keep your camera in hand, and you won’t miss the fun!

2. Focus on the Emotions

Taking photos of your kids isn’t just about the wide shots. It’s also about zooming in on their faces and capturing the emotions that make the moment special. Whether it’s the pure excitement on their face as they race down a sledding hill or the concentration as they pack a snowball, these moments are full of raw, unfiltered joy. Don’t forget to snap some close-up shots—they often tell a deeper story than the wider ones.

3. Use the Snow as Your Backdrop

One of the best things about taking photos of your kids in the snow is how stunning the snow can look as a backdrop. The white landscape creates a beautiful, neutral canvas that really makes the colors of your kids’ outfits pop. Plus, the soft light from the snow reflects beautifully on their faces, especially when it’s cloudy or overcast. I love how soft and dreamy the snow makes everything look—it’s like a perfect filter!

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Get a Little Wet

Okay, let’s be real for a second: You’re going to get snow on your camera. It even rained a little our first snow day. But honestly? That’s part of the fun! I’m not afraid to jump into the action—whether it’s lying on the ground to get a shot of my kids rolling around in the snow or following them as they race down a hill. The best photos often come when you get involved in the moment. So, don’t be afraid to get a little snow on you—it’ll be worth it for those priceless memories.

5. Don’t Forget to Capture the Details

Sometimes the little details are just as important as the big moments. Taking photos of your kids means capturing the tiny things—like their snow-covered mittens, the pattern of their scarf blowing in the wind, or the tracks left behind in the snow. These small details help tell the whole story of the day and bring you right back to that moment whenever you look at the photos.

6. Have Fun with It!

At the end of the day, taking photos of your kids is all about having fun. Don’t stress over getting the perfect shot. Let your kids play, laugh, and be themselves. The best photos happen when everyone is relaxed and enjoying the moment. So let go of expectations and enjoy the time you have with your little ones—they’ll only be this small once, and these photos will be a precious reminder of their childhood.

I hope you enjoyed a few of my favorite photos from our snowy adventure. I’m so happy I was able to capture the joy on my kids’ faces during these precious moments. Whether it’s a snow day or a weekend outing, don’t forget to take photos of your kids and preserve these memories!
