Hey there, friends! Today, we’re talking about champagne spray photos with yours truly, senior photographer Mattie Wezah. If you’ve ever seen those captivating shots of champagne bottles spraying and fizzing, you know just how fun they can be. But behind every stunning champagne spray photo lies some set-up and even a little caution.

Picture this: Mattie, camera in hand, ready to capture that perfect moment. The stage is set, everyone is in place and you’re ready to pop the cork… Mattie then shares a humorous anecdote from a previous shoot – a cautionary tale, if you will.

It was a beautiful glowy evening with the sun setting over the Sunken Gardens, and I was photographing a group of seniors at the Wren Building. We were having a great time chatting about the future and William and Mary. Everything was going well until one friend decided to pop the champagne bottle (her first time ever trying this). The next thing we knew, the cork went flying, hitting her close friend right in the face. To say we needed photoshop for the final images due to swelling would be an understatement. What a graduation gift!

Lesson learned? Always open that champagne bottle away from your friends (unless you have a vendetta!) and keep a firm grip on the cork to avoid any unexpected surprises. Thankfully, the student was ok, but her graduation pictures looked a little different than expected. Don’t worry – this won’t happen to you because you’re reading this blog!

Once the bottle is safely uncorked, it’s time to get into position for the shot. Choose a location in the grass so you don’t leave behind a residue on brick paths or a mess for your campus to clean up. Keep the bottle covered with your thumb and start shaking once you’re in position. With the fizz building up inside the bottle, anticipation fills the air… And then, triumphantly (isn’t this fun!), the champagne erupts in a glorious spray, showering everything in its path.

don't forget to plan your champagne spray photos in the grass at William and Mary so you don't leave residue

But here’s the secret to getting that perfect shot – keep your composure! It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of the moment, but remember to keep your face looking happy and not shocked. After all, we want those champagne spray photos to capture the joy and celebration of the occasion, not your surprise/shock at the champagne spraying everywhere.

We all love the campus of William and Mary and want to make sure our champagne spray photos are respectful!

So now you have it – the inside scoop on how to capture those breathtaking champagne spray photos, straight from the lens of senior photographer Mattie Wezah. With a blend of caution, humor, and timing, you too can create moments that sparkle and shine for years to come. Cheers to that!
