One of the biggest questions when planning William and Mary senior photos is timing. Since most graduates want to wear their cap and gown and include iconic campus locations, the time of day can make a huge difference in how your final gallery looks and feels.

William & Mary is beautiful all day, but many of the most popular locations are in direct, harsh sun for much of the day. The Wren Building, Crim Dell, and open walkways can be stunning, but the light matters. Choosing either early morning or evening gives you softer light, fewer shadows, and a more relaxed experience.

Morning William and Mary Senior Photos

Morning sessions can be a great option, especially during busy graduation season. Campus is often quieter, the temperature is cooler, and popular spots may be less crowded.

Morning light tends to feel clean and fresh. If you’re hoping for a calm start to the day and fewer people in the background, this can be a wonderful choice.

Morning sessions are especially helpful if:

  • You want fewer crowds
  • You prefer cooler temperatures
  • Your family is joining for a few portraits
  • You want to start the day early and be done

Evening William and Mary Senior Photos

Evening sessions are my personal favorite for many senior portraits because the light becomes softer and warmer as the sun sets. That glowy light can make cap and gown portraits feel polished, flattering, and celebratory.

Evening is also beautiful if you want to add nearby Colonial Williamsburg gardens or brick pathways to your session for variety.

Evening sessions are a great fit if:

  • You love golden hour light
  • You want a warmer, softer look
  • You are comfortable with a later start time
  • You want more glow in your portraits

What About Midday?

Midday is usually the hardest time for senior portraits. The sun is high, shadows are stronger, and many iconic spots on campus do not have much shade. While we can absolutely work around tricky light, morning or evening gives the best results.

Which Time Should You Choose?

For most William and Mary senior photos, I recommend either early morning or evening before sunset. Both can work beautifully. The best choice depends on your schedule, the season, and whether you prefer a fresh morning feel or warmer golden-hour glow.

If your family is joining, we can also plan the session so we capture a mix of individual cap and gown portraits, family photos, and a few fun walking or candid images around campus.

Wrapping Up

Your senior session is such a meaningful way to celebrate your time at William & Mary. Whether you choose morning or evening, thoughtful timing helps your photos feel natural, flattering, and true to this exciting milestone.

If you’re planning William and Mary senior photos, I’d love to help you choose the best time and locations for your session.
